US Paralympians Achieve Historic Milestones at Milan Cortina Games

In a stunning display of athletic prowess, Team USA dominated the Para cross-country mixed relay at the Milan Cortina Winter Paralympic Games, securing a gold medal that highlighted both personal triumphs and national pride. The victorious quartet, consisting of Jake Adicoff, Oksana Masters, Joshua Sweeney, and Sydney Peterson, celebrated on the podium in Val di Fiemme, Italy, marking a memorable moment in Paralympic history.

Jake Adicoff's Groundbreaking Victory

Jake Adicoff, who is vision impaired, has made headlines by becoming the first out gay American male athlete to win gold in the Winter Paralympics. His journey to this historic achievement began earlier in the week with individual gold medals in the sprint classic race and the interval start classic. Adicoff's success continued in the mixed relay, where his performance was met with an exuberant tackle from teammate Oksana Masters at the finish line.

"It was initially a hug, and then she kind of put all her weight into it, and then all of a sudden I was on the ground," Adicoff recounted. "She goes crazy, she's got a lot of passion. She takes that to the race course and to the celebrations afterwards." This playful moment underscored the camaraderie within the US team, as Adicoff expressed his enjoyment of watching his teammates compete, calling it his favorite part of the day.

Adicoff's celebrations have included taking bows to his fans, a gesture he has performed after each victory, including at the podium ceremony. With fans donning hats bearing his name, he humorously noted, "I'm trying to think of something new every time. You've got to keep it fresh. If anyone has any ideas, let me know." He will have another opportunity to shine in his final race, the 20-kilometer interval start free event on Sunday.

Oksana Masters Extends Her Record

Oksana Masters further cemented her legacy as the most decorated American Winter Paralympian by winning her 23rd Paralympic medal, a record-extending achievement. This gold medal in the mixed relay adds to her impressive haul at the Milan Cortina Games, where she has secured four gold medals, the most of any athlete so far. Masters, who also competes in Para rowing and Para cycling during the Summer Games, now boasts a total of 18 Winter Paralympic medals and five Summer Paralympic medals.

"It feels so unreal. Four times just feels like a fake number right now. For it to be gold is just a dream," Masters shared. "I'm just so lucky because I never even think about these stats at all when I race. I did not expect that at this Games at all, but there's something in Italy and the air and the coffee, the pizza, that is treating me well." Her passion was evident as she tackled Adicoff in celebration, driven by excitement for his pursuit of a clean sweep in cross-country skiing.

Team USA's Dominance and Background Stories

The US team's victory in the Para cross-country mixed relay was a testament to their skill and determination. Joshua Sweeney and Sydney Peterson contributed significantly to the effort, showcasing the depth of talent within American Paralympic skiing. This win follows Adicoff's previous success in helping the US secure the mixed relay gold at the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games, marking a comeback from retirement after the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, where he won a silver medal.

Adicoff's journey is particularly inspiring due to his visual impairment, resulting from contracting chicken pox in utero, which left him with no vision in his right eye and limited vision in his left. Growing up in Sun Valley, Idaho, he transitioned from Alpine skiing to cross-country at a young age, a move that ultimately led to his Paralympic success. He is one of five openly gay athletes representing the United States at Milan Cortina, a significant step forward in LGBTQ+ representation in sports.

As the Milan Cortina Games continue, these achievements highlight the resilience and excellence of Paralympic athletes, with Team USA setting new standards and breaking barriers in winter sports.
