Former US President Donald Trump has offered a public update regarding golf legend Tiger Woods, following Woods' recent arrest for driving under the influence in Florida. Trump stated that Woods is "doing great" despite enduring "a life of pain" due to chronic physical ailments.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
Tiger Woods, aged 50, was involved in a rollover car accident on Jupiter Island last week. His vehicle reportedly clipped a pressure-washer truck before flipping over and skidding down the road. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI and held in jail for eight hours before being released on bail.
Trump's Remarks on Woods' Condition
In a phone interview with the New York Post, Trump elaborated on Woods' health. "He tested negative for alcohol, as you know, and he is under a tremendous physical pressure from his various ailments, you know, the back and the leg," Trump said. "He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain. He's an amazing guy. He's an amazing athlete. He does have pain. He doesn't have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain."
Trump has previously described Woods as "a very close friend of mine" and "an amazing man." Notably, Woods is currently in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., with whom she shares five children.
Legal Charges and Previous Incidents
Alongside the DUI charge, Woods faces additional counts for property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Under recent changes to Florida law, refusing a law enforcement officer's request for a breath, blood, or urine test is now classified as a misdemeanor, even for a first offence.
This marks the second DUI incident involving Woods, following a previous arrest in Florida in May 2017. He was also involved in a serious car crash in California in 2021, which resulted in significant injuries.
Upcoming Legal and Sporting Events
Woods' first court appearance is scheduled for 23 April. It remains uncertain whether the 50-year-old golfer will participate in the Masters tournament, set to take place from 9 to 12 April in Augusta, Georgia. The outcome of his legal proceedings could impact his ability to compete in this prestigious event.
