UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has unleashed a furious tirade against welterweight king Islam Makhachev following the collapse of their highly anticipated super-fight, which was slated for the historic White House event. Topuria, who will now defend his title against Justin Gaethje on June 14, did not hold back in his criticism, accusing Makhachev of making excuses and promising to take out his frustration on his new opponent.
White House Showdown Takes Unexpected Turn
The main event at The White House on June 14 will feature Topuria putting his 155lb lightweight title on the line against Justin Gaethje, who earned his shot with a victory over Paddy Pimblett in January. However, the Spanish-Georgian champion has revealed that the UFC initially offered him a blockbuster clash with Makhachev, the reigning welterweight champion, only for the Russian fighter to be ruled out due to an injury.
In a fiery social media post, Topuria expressed his disbelief and anger at the situation. "Once again Islam comes up with an excuse, this time it’s an injury," he wrote. "I always knew I would be part of the White House event. Even when the UFC told me at one point that they wouldn’t count on me for the event, I knew it was part of the negotiation."
Topuria's Scathing Remarks and Gaethje Warning
Topuria detailed how the fight with Makhachev was nearly confirmed, with the White House card announcement imminent, only for him to wake up to news of the injury. "When they finally told me I would be on the White House card, they mentioned Islam and I didn’t hesitate for a second to accept the fight," he explained. "Even though the fight hadn’t been officially confirmed yet, the White House card was going to be announced the next day and when I woke, I found out that Islam had gotten injured - and then Justin Gaethje appeared."
The champion did not mince words, adding, "Once again, someone else who will pay for Islam’s escape. Both of their manager is a b**** and also ugly as hell. Justin, see you at the White House. I’m not someone who humiliates people. It will be quick. When you wake up, everything will already be over."
Background and Ambitions of the Champion
Ilia Topuria has not stepped into the octagon since his stunning knockout victory over Charles Oliveira in June of last year, which secured him the vacant lightweight title. Prior to this, he also held the featherweight championship, showcasing his dominance across multiple weight classes.
His long-term goal remains clear: to become the first fighter in UFC history to capture world titles in three different weight divisions. This ambition adds significant stakes to his upcoming bout, as a win over Gaethje could pave the way for future super-fights and historic achievements.
The White House event promises to be a landmark moment in mixed martial arts, blending sports with a unique venue. With Topuria's explosive comments and Gaethje's proven toughness, fans are eagerly anticipating a thrilling showdown that could have major implications for the UFC landscape.
