However, they hit back in style on Wednesday afternoon with a dominant 9-2 victory over the USA after just six ends, securing their place in the hunt for a medal and a play-off spot.
Bruce Mouat's rink required external help to seal a top-four position, needing either Norway or Italy to lose their final match on Thursday morning. Italy obliged by losing 9-5 to unbeaten Switzerland, while Norway beat already-qualified Canada to claim the final qualifying spot, just one place above GB.
Britain's uphill task continues as they face top qualifiers Switzerland in the semi-final from 6.35pm GMT on Thursday evening. A win would guarantee at least a silver medal, matching their achievement from Beijing four years ago.
