Supercomputer Forecasts Awkward Masters Moment for McIlroy and DeChambeau
A supercomputer has projected a potentially uncomfortable scenario at the 2026 Masters Tournament, predicting that Rory McIlroy will be forced to present the coveted Green Jacket to his long-time rival Bryson DeChambeau at Augusta National. The simulation, conducted by data analysts at Action Network, suggests DeChambeau will claim his first Masters title and third major championship victory.
How the Supercomputer Reached Its Conclusion
The predictive model, which was run an impressive 10,000 times, analysed three key factors for each qualified player: recent competitive form, current Official Golf World Rankings, and historical performances at Augusta National. From the top 50 players expected to feature on the final leaderboard, the most frequent results were highlighted to determine the likeliest outcome.
According to the supercomputer's projections, Bryson DeChambeau will triumph with a winning score of 13-under-par. The American golfer, whose best Masters finish to date remains his fifth-place showing in 2025, is given a 33.1% probability of claiming victory and a 68.6% chance of making the cut.
The Potential for an Uncomfortable Presentation Ceremony
Should these predictions prove accurate, reigning champion Rory McIlroy would face the awkward task of presenting the Green Jacket to DeChambeau during the traditional ceremony. The pair's rivalry has intensified significantly in recent years, particularly after DeChambeau's controversial departure from the PGA Tour to join the LIV Golf circuit.
Their relationship reached a particularly low point during last year's Masters final round, when McIlroy ended his decade-long major drought while paired with DeChambeau. The American later revealed that McIlroy refused to engage in conversation throughout their final 18 holes together at Augusta.
Supercomputer's Projected Leaderboard Contradicts Bookmakers
The supercomputer's forecast places Sweden's Ludvig Aberg as DeChambeau's closest challenger, projected to finish two shots behind at 11-under-par. This prediction directly contradicts current bookmaker odds, which favour two-time champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler as the tournament favourite.
The complete projected top ten leaderboard according to the supercomputer simulation includes:
- 1. Bryson DeChambeau: -13 (33.1% win probability, 68.6% cut probability)
- 2. Ludvig Aberg: -11 (19.2% win probability, 68.4% cut probability)
- T3. Justin Rose: -9 (8.1% win probability, 67.3% cut probability)
- T3. Cameron Young: -9 (8.1% win probability, 67.3% cut probability)
- 5. Matt Fitzpatrick: -8 (6.8% win probability, 66.3% cut probability)
- 6. Scottie Scheffler: -7 (5.4% win probability, 66.2% cut probability)
- T7. Rory McIlroy: -6 (3.3% win probability, 66% cut probability)
- T7. Xander Schauffele: -6 (3.3% win probability, 66% cut probability)
- T7. Tommy Fleetwood: -6 (3.3% win probability, 66% cut probability)
- 10. Brooks Koepka: -5 (3% win probability, 65.2% cut probability)
Notably, the simulation gives Scheffler just a 5.4% chance of victory at Augusta, projecting the two-time winner to finish in sixth position. Reigning champion McIlroy is forecast to tie for seventh place alongside Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood, all at six-under-par.
Three-time Masters runner-up Justin Rose is backed to share third position with Players Championship winner Cameron Young, both at nine-under-par. Matt Fitzpatrick, who finished as runner-up to Young at the Players Championship, completes the projected top five at eight-under-par.
