Ryanair passengers are being reminded of an important safety rule that many may not be aware of: high heels should be removed before boarding the aircraft. While the airline does not ban heels outright, it strongly advises against wearing them during flights due to safety concerns.
Why Heels Are Discouraged
According to travel tips shared online by a woman named Sarah Geissler, wearing heels on a Ryanair flight can increase the risk of tripping in the cabin. More critically, heels can puncture the inflatable emergency evacuation slides, which could compromise passenger safety during an evacuation.
In a video clip posted by Geissler, a sign on a plane seat indicated that heels are not permitted. She humorously captioned the clip: "No heels allowed on your Ryanair flight," adding that it was "bad news for baddies." However, the underlying message is serious: in an emergency, cabin crew will instruct passengers to remove their heels before using the escape slide.
Additional Emergency Advice
Beyond heels, passengers are also advised to remove glasses and other items that could become dislodged during an impact. One Reddit user commented: "Heels can damage an escape slide, and glasses, earrings, and false teeth could be ripped out during impact. Hence, get them off before the event."
Another user noted: "Remove high heels (especially important if you leave the plane via slide). Remove ear buds or headsets so you can hear emergency instructions." A third added: "The point is not to wear pointy things when coming down the inflatable slide in order not to make holes in it."
