Natalie Pinkham Makes F1 Comeback After Spinal Surgery Scare
Sky Sports Formula 1 presenter Natalie Pinkham is set to return to her broadcasting duties this weekend for the Japanese Grand Prix, following a five-month absence due to major neck surgery. The 48-year-old, a staple of Sky's F1 coverage for 14 years, had to step back after doctors warned of potential permanent nerve damage from a disc pressing on her spinal cord.
In an emotional Instagram post, Pinkham shared: "Hi friends. So, it has been a long, and if I'm completely honest, quite difficult five months of rehab since my neck surgery. But I'm really happy to say that I have been given the all clear to do long hauls again. My first [race] that I will be presenting for Sky F1 this year is Japan. And I am really happy about that because I bloody love Suzuka, so very excited to see you then."
Family Life and Famous Brother
Born in Buckinghamshire to a barrister mother and property developer father, Natalie Pinkham is not the only notable figure in her family. Her older brother, Sam Pinkham, is a well-known presenter who has hosted Virgin Radio's early morning show and appears on Channel 5's Holiday Homes In The Sun, while also providing cover for Radio 2.
Natalie is married to businessman Owain Walbyoff, with whom she has two children: a son, Wilf, born in January 2015, and a daughter, Willow, born in June 2016. Australian former Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo serves as godfather to Wilf. Pinkham has spoken candidly about the challenges of balancing motherhood and career, recalling in an interview with Fabulous magazine that she returned to work "too soon" after Willow's birth, feeling like a "complete mess" and struggling to remember her own name on screen.
Friendship with Caroline Flack and Mental Health Advocacy
Natalie Pinkham was a close friend of the late TV presenter Caroline Flack, who died by suicide in February 2020 at the age of 40. Pinkham has opened up about their bond, stating she still feels Flack's presence and lives by the mantra: "What would Flacky do?" She emphasized the importance of keeping Flack's memory alive, saying, "Do I feel her around me? Yeah. I think so. We (Caroline’s friends) have this mantra when we wonder what to do, we say, ‘What would Flacky do?’ And I like to do the same."
The two met while working on the European Poker Tour in 2005. In the wake of Flack's death, Pinkham co-founded Flackstock with author and TV presenter Dawn O'Porter, an annual music festival dedicated to raising funds for mental health charities in Flack's honour. Pinkham reflected on the tragedy, noting, "A lot of people who didn’t know her, when we talk about how much she laughed and that she loved life, can’t therefore understand why she ended up taking her own life, and I think that’s something that will probably confuse and pain us for the rest of our days."
Royal Connections and Social Circle
Beyond her F1 colleagues, Natalie Pinkham boasts royal connections, often seen at events with Zara Tindall, the King's niece. The pair have been part of the same social circle for years, and Pinkham has praised Tindall's parenting skills, describing her as "the most hands-on mother I know. She's unbelievable, she's so present for her kids." Recent sightings include the Cheltenham Festival, highlighting their enduring friendship.
As Pinkham resumes her role alongside Sky Sports hosts like Simon Lazenby, Martin Brundell, and Bernie Collins, fans eagerly anticipate her return to the broadcaster's comprehensive F1 coverage every race weekend.
