Top Jockey Luke Nolen Handed 24-Day Suspension for Post-Race Incident
Renowned jockey Luke Nolen, best known for his historic partnership with the legendary Australian sprinter Black Caviar, has been banned from racing for 24 days following a controversial incident after a race at Pakenham. The 45-year-old rider, who has amassed nearly 2,000 career wins, admitted to a charge of improper riding after deliberately steering his mount, Irreverent, into rival horse The Benchmark once the race had concluded.
Race Day Drama and Stewards' Investigation
The incident occurred during a seven-furlong maiden race at Pakenham on Thursday, which was marred by multiple instances of interference between Irreverent and the narrow winner, The Benchmark, ridden by jockey Lachlan Neindorf. As the horses approached the finish line, they came into close proximity, prompting Nolen to lodge an official objection against The Benchmark on grounds of interference over the final furlong and a half.
Stewards reviewed footage showing that near the 300-meter mark, Irreverent shifted out and brushed against The Benchmark. Subsequently, The Benchmark, which was laying in, shifted inward toward Irreverent, causing Irreverent to move further away. Over the final 100 meters, Irreverent raced tightly to the inside of The Benchmark, which continued to lay in. However, the racing panel ultimately dismissed Nolen's objection, concluding that Irreverent would not have finished ahead of The Benchmark regardless of the interference.
Post-Race Confrontation and Penalty
The focus of the investigation shifted dramatically to events after the finish line. Video evidence revealed that Nolen intentionally turned Irreverent's head outward and directed the horse toward The Benchmark, resulting in heavy contact between the two animals. Racing.com analysts noted, "There is another coming together and it looks like a couple of words said between the two of them," indicating a verbal exchange between the jockeys following the physical bump.
In the stewards' report, Nolen pleaded guilty to improper riding for his actions after passing the winning post. The report stated, "Luke Nolen had his licence to ride in races suspended for 24 race meetings. In assessing penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, the circumstances surrounding the incident, his good record, the significant nature of the contact and the seriousness of the charge."
Background and Broader Context
Luke Nolen's career is indelibly linked to Black Caviar, the undefeated champion sprinter whom he rode to 22 of her 25 consecutive victories, including a memorable win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2012. This suspension marks a significant setback for the experienced jockey, whose record had previously been largely unblemished.
The race also involved scrutiny of Lachlan Neindorf, who was questioned about his body and arm movements rounding the home turn. Neindorf explained that he was attempting to maintain his racing line while under pressure from Irreverent on his inside. Despite this, the primary disciplinary action centered on Nolen's post-race conduct, underscoring the strict standards enforced in professional horse racing to ensure safety and sportsmanship.
