Joseph Baena, the youngest son of Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, was spotted enjoying a shirtless stroll through Santa Monica on Sunday. This marked his first public appearance since achieving significant success at his inaugural bodybuilding competition.
Post-Competition Celebration
The 28-year-old, often labeled a nepotism beneficiary, confidently displayed his impressive physique during the spring walk. He wore Matrix-inspired grey sunglasses, black shorts, and simple beige flip-flop sandals, carrying his black shirt while listening to music through classic iPhone headphones. The temperature was a pleasant 68 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for showcasing his sculpted 6-foot-1-inch muscular frame.
Rapid Muscle Gain and Competition Details
In preparation for the NPC Natural Colorado State event in Denver last Saturday, Baena revealed he had added an impressive 18 pounds of muscle in just eight weeks. The competition, held at the Pinnacle Performing Arts Center, enforced strict natural bodybuilding standards. All participants underwent drug testing and completed a 30-minute polygraph examination to verify they were completely drug-free.
Baena's performance was outstanding, securing first place in three separate men's categories: open bodybuilding heavy weight class, classic physique true novice, and classic physique novice. Additionally, he achieved second place in the classic physique open class C division.
Social Media Gratitude and Future Plans
Expressing his appreciation on Instagram, the Christie's real estate agent wrote, "Thank you all for the sweet messages! Time to do it again on Saturday!" With nearly one million social media followers, Baena's post received considerable attention. True to his word, he returned to the gym shortly after his walk, performing leg presses with his trainer, though his next competition remains unspecified.
Family Dynamics and Training Support
While Baena made his competitive debut, his famous 78-year-old father was in Birmingham, England, hosting the 2026 Arnold Classic UK. Schwarzenegger presented Nigerian champion Chinedu Obiekea Andrew, known as "Jacked," with a historic $1 million prize. Reflecting on the sport's evolution, Schwarzenegger noted, "We have come a long way from the days when I won a thousand dollars for winning Mr. Olympia and I am so proud of the sport."
Despite his busy schedule, the seven-time Mr. Olympia made time to train Baena at Gold's Gym in Venice, California, before the competition. Baena emphasized his father's old-school philosophy in a 2022 interview with Men's Health: "My dad is old-school; he doesn't believe in handouts. He believes hard work pays off, and so do I." He added, "I love the word honor, and I'm very prideful in the sense that if I use my dad's contacts or ask him for favors, I wonder what honor is that gonna bring me?"
Following in His Father's Footsteps
Among Schwarzenegger's five children, Baena has most closely followed his father's path, despite primarily growing up with his chef mother, Mildred "Patty" Baena, in Bakersfield, California. His journey into bodybuilding began after Schwarzenegger gifted him a copy of "The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding," which the actor co-authored in 1985.
The family's complex history includes Schwarzenegger's 2011 revelation that he fathered Baena during a one-night stand with his former housekeeper, which ended his 25-year marriage to journalist Maria Shriver. Their divorce was finalized in 2021. Shriver, the 70-year-old niece of President John F. Kennedy, expressed her heartbreak in her poetry book "I Am Maria," writing that the divorce "broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me."
On a positive note, Baena and his girlfriend, Dutch model Mel Randel, will celebrate their third anniversary on May 3, highlighting his personal life beyond bodybuilding and family legacy.
