Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry has faced criticism after appearing to support calls for a burqa ban in the UK. The 44-year-old commented on an Instagram post by ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe, who has launched a new political movement called Restore Britain.
Lowe's post featured a photo of a Muslim woman in a burqa outside a London Underground station with Bengali text. He wrote: 'Restore Britain would ban the burqa, and Restore Britain would ensure that all London stations use English and English only.' Terry responded with three clapping emojis and an England flag.
Lowe defended Terry, stating that the former footballer's stance reflects the views of 'the vast majority of the British people.' Lowe, who represents Great Yarmouth, left Reform UK after being suspended over allegations of threatening behaviour and bullying, which he denies.
Terry has previously criticised the UK government's treatment of former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, describing the sanctions imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine as 'disgusting.' He praised Abramovich's contributions to the NHS and Chelsea during the pandemic.
