Radio 1 Breakfast DJ Greg James erupted with joyous screams on Friday as he discovered his gruelling Comic Relief tandem bike challenge had raised an astonishing £2.8 million, mere miles from the finish line in Edinburgh. The 40-year-old broadcaster, cycling 1000km over eight days, received the thrilling update during a pit stop in North Middleton, Midlothian, just 16 miles from his final destination.
Moment of Elation Near the Finish
Greg set off from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders on his final day with fundraising totals already at £2.5 million. During a break, radio host Matt Edmonson revealed live on air that donations had surged to £2,823,694 in just over an hour. "2.8 million!! YESSS!" Greg screamed, adding, "Wow. We're really moving! It is stupid now. But that's fun. Silly things are fun aren't they?"
He urged supporters to push the total to three million, dedicating the effort to "Arthur and his big seat." The emotional moment capped a week of surprises, including a visit from Prince William earlier in the challenge.
Emotional Struggles and Family Support
On Thursday, Greg broke down in tears when reunited with his sister and niece, admitting he felt "rotten" on the seventh day of the exhausting ride. He had been masking emotions after his father Alan suffered a stroke just days before the challenge began, preventing his parents from joining him.
Speaking on his Radio 1 show, Greg credited his "village" of support—including his wife Bella, family, friends, and colleagues—for keeping him going. "I'm so lucky to have those people," he said, explaining why he kept smiling despite the physical toll. "There are lots of people that don't have those people when they need it, and I feel terrible about that. That's why I wanted to do this."
Celebrity Appearances and Fundraising Milestones
Greg received help from pal Jamie Laing, who joined him on the tandem bike wearing a skimpy outfit in a humorous nod to a past pledge. Greg had promised to wear a wedding dress if donations exceeded £450,000, a target fans easily smashed. The dress honoured his wife Bella, who proposed to him before his 2018 Sport Relief challenge.
By Thursday evening, donations reached £2.4 million, setting the stage for the final push. With 75 miles left to Edinburgh, Greg prepared for the last leg during the Comic Relief telethon, fueled by overwhelming public generosity.
The challenge highlights the power of community and perseverance, with Greg's emotional journey resonating deeply with supporters across the nation.
