Greg James Breaks Down After Epic Comic Relief Bike Ride Raises £3.3 Million

Radio 1 presenter Greg James was overcome with emotion after completing an exhausting 1,000-kilometre tandem bike ride, which has raised an incredible £3.3 million for Comic Relief. The DJ reached the finish line at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh following an eight-day journey from Weymouth, greeted by huge cheers from a supportive crowd.

"I Can't Believe It's Done!"

An emotional James exclaimed, "I can't believe it's done!" before breaking down in tears at his victory. He praised the "spirit" he experienced while cycling through the United Kingdom, adding, "It's been the biggest privilege to do this." Despite his achievement, James humorously declared he would "never cycle again" after the gruelling challenge.

The DJ described the struggle of the ride to fellow presenter Jack Saunders, stating, "It's been such a struggle at times, but everyone has got me through it. The thing I'll remember the most is seeing the joy from everyone and pushing through the pain to get to that joy."

Royal Support and Celebrity Encouragement

James received significant support during his epic 630-mile journey, which began on Friday, 13 March. Prince William joined him for a leg through South Yorkshire, leaving James notably nervous. The DJ admitted, "That's the tightest I've grabbed the handlebars for the whole week," and expressed relief that he "didn't kill the future king" after the Prince of Wales completed his segment.

Comedian Joe Lycett also participated in the ride, providing companionship and encouragement. Additionally, James received video messages of support from a host of stars, including:

  • Singers Chris Martin and Nick Jonas
  • Formula 1 driver Lando Norris
  • Comedian Bob Mortimer

Personal Motivation and Family Support

James gave a special shoutout to his father, who is currently hospitalised after suffering a stroke, highlighting the personal motivation behind his efforts. He trudged to the finish line feeling "depleted" and "rotten" from exhaustion but was spurred on by his wife, author Bella Mackie, his mother, and Radio 1 colleagues Jamie Laing and Alice Levine.

History of Exhausting Challenges

This is not James's first demanding fundraiser for Comic Relief, also known as Red Nose Day. Over the past decade, he has completed several arduous challenges, including:

  1. Five triathlons in five days
  2. Climbing mountains Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis

These previous efforts raised approximately £2 million in total, making his latest achievement a significant increase in fundraising success.
