The four-time Grammy-winning group headlined the opening ceremony, performing a medley of hits including 'Holiday,' 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams,' and 'American Idiot.' Despite speculation that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong would make a statement about ICE, as he did earlier in the week, no political moment occurred. Instead, Armstrong shouted, 'Welcome to the Bay! It's Super Bowl 60,' celebrating the game's diamond anniversary.
Other pregame performers included Coco Jones, who delivered a soulful rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing,' known as the Black National Anthem. Brandi Carlile performed 'America the Beautiful' with guitar and string accompaniment, while Charlie Puth closed with the National Anthem, accompanied by a military flyover.
The performances kicked off Super Bowl LX, which saw the Seattle Seahawks face the New England Patriots.
