Gardeners Warned: Avoid Cutting 'Forbidden' Tree in May

Gardeners across Britain are being urged to avoid cutting down a particular native tree on specific dates in May, according to ancient folklore that still holds sway in some rural areas. The blackthorn, also known as wild plum or the 'wishing thorn', is a shrub native to the UK that produces sloes in autumn. However, centuries-old beliefs declare it 'forbidden' to fell on two particular dates each year: May 11 and November 11.

The Origins of the Superstition

In Celtic mythology, the blackthorn was considered a 'magical tree' and was believed to be protected by the lunantishees, or moon fairies. According to the blog Irish Stick, these fairies were no friends to humans and would curse anyone foolish enough to cut down a blackthorn on November 11 (the original All Hallows' Eve) or on May 11 (original May Day). The best time to harvest the tree was during the full moon, when the lunantishees were away. On a good day, they might even grant inspiration to musicians and poets, or valour and strength to warriors.

Connection to Hawthorn

The blackthorn shares its rich folklore with the hawthorn, often considered its 'cousin'. Hawthorns were commonly planted as living memorials to the deceased and were thought to be gateways to the 'Otherworld' in fairy lore. Cutting down a hawthorn was believed to 'lead to instant death', according to superstition. Even today, many people avoid bringing hawthorn blossoms indoors, as it was considered deeply unlucky.

While these beliefs may seem quaint to modern gardeners, they partly explain why blackthorn and hawthorn remain abundant in the British countryside, standing in seemingly random spots. So, if you see a blackthorn this May, think twice before reaching for your saw—especially if it's the 11th.
