A flight attendant has delivered a blunt response to passengers who request seat swaps on aircraft, highlighting critical safety and logistical factors often overlooked by travellers. The cabin crew member, known as Ms Attendant Tea on TikTok, addressed the controversial practice in a video that has sparked widespread discussion.
The Crew Member's Perspective
In her clip, Ms Attendant Tea questioned why passengers become upset when told they cannot move seats. She emphasised that seat assignments are determined by boarding pass or mobile app, and that those wishing to change seats could have done so during booking—even if it required an additional fee. She also noted that passengers could address seat changes at the gate before boarding.
Once onboard, however, the situation becomes more complex. The flight attendant explained that every seat's weight is factored into the aircraft's weight and balance calculations, which are essential for safe takeoff and landing. She stated: 'When you get on a plane and ask me if you can sit somewhere else because you see an empty seat, and I say no—what is the problem?' She insisted that refusing such requests does not make her 'mean,' as there are valid reasons behind the policy.
Why Seat Swaps Are Restricted
Flight attendants restrict unapproved seat swapping primarily to ensure proper weight distribution and balance. Pilots calculate takeoff weights based on specific seating arrangements, and even minor shifts can affect performance. Additionally, maintaining an accurate passenger manifest is crucial for emergencies, and seat swaps can disrupt service delivery, including meals and special assistance, which are organised according to seating charts.
Ms Attendant Tea also expressed frustration when passengers demand explanations for the refusal, stating that she does not need to validate the decision. She noted that unapproved moves could potentially delay flights by requiring recalculations.
This is not the first time the topic has surfaced. Previously, another passenger shared an incident where a pregnant woman requested a seat swap, sparking similar debate. The flight attendant's remarks serve as a reminder that air travel involves numerous behind-the-scenes calculations that passengers may not consider.
