Swiss Football Club FC Basel Cancels Kanye West Performance Over Values Conflict
Swiss football club FC Basel has become the latest organisation to cancel a planned performance by controversial artist Kanye West, citing a fundamental conflict with their institutional values. The club confirmed that a proposed show at their St Jakob-Park stadium in June will not proceed following a thorough internal review.
"Not in Accordance with Our Values"
FC Basel representatives told Reuters that after careful consideration, they determined they could not "provide a platform for the artist in question within this context." The club's spokesperson elaborated that while they had received and considered the enquiry, the planned event was "not in accordance with our values" and therefore would not move forward.
This decision continues a pattern of cancellations affecting West's European tour, with the artist now known professionally as Ye facing significant backlash over his past antisemitic comments and controversial public statements. The Swiss cancellation follows similar actions by venues and authorities across the continent.
European Tour Faces Multiple Setbacks
West's planned performance at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, scheduled for 19 June, has also been cancelled. Polish officials cited "formal and legal reasons" for the decision, with Poland's culture minister Marta Cienkoska publicly condemning the proposed show as "unacceptable."
Cienkoska specifically referenced West's history of antisemitic statements, minimization of historical crimes, and commercialisation of Nazi symbolism through merchandise. "These are not 'controversies'," she declared. "This is a deliberate crossing of boundaries and the normalisation of hatred."
Earlier this month, the UK government prevented West from performing at London's Wireless Festival by denying him entry to the country. Additionally, the artist himself announced the postponement of his Marseille concert in France, stating he needed more time to demonstrate his "commitment to make amends" while protecting his fans from being caught in the controversy.
Remaining Shows Face Uncertainty
Despite these widespread cancellations, some scheduled performances remain on West's calendar. The promoter for his Madrid concert has confirmed to The Independent that "The Ye Live Madrid show is going ahead as planned," expressing confidence in ticket sales and promising "an incredible night for Ye fans."
West addressed the Marseille postponement directly on social media, writing: "After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille. I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends. I take full responsibility for what's mine but I don't want to put my fans in the middle of it."
The artist concluded his statement by affirming: "My fans are everything to me. Looking forward to the next shows. See you at the top of the globe."
This latest cancellation by FC Basel represents another significant setback for West's European tour plans, as institutions increasingly weigh artistic programming against ethical considerations and public values.
