Ellie Simmonds Embarks on Dog Fostering Journey Following Crufts Hosting Role
Paralympic champion and television presenter Ellie Simmonds has announced an exciting personal development following her successful hosting of Channel 4's Crufts coverage. The five-time Paralympic gold medallist has officially submitted an application to become a foster carer for dogs through the charity Dogs Trust, marking a significant step in her lifelong passion for animal welfare.
From Crufts Presenter to Prospective Foster Carer
This year's Crufts event at Birmingham's NEC proved to be the largest in the competition's history, featuring nearly 20,000 meticulously groomed canines vying for the prestigious Best in Show title. Ellie Simmonds, who brought the action to viewers nationwide, revealed exclusively to the Mirror that her experience has inspired her to take the next step in her relationship with dogs.
"I've always loved animals, particularly dogs," explained the 31-year-old athlete-turned-presenter. "Working on Crufts with Channel 4 this year has been incredible, and it's motivated me to put in my application to foster a dog. Fostering rather than adopting suits my flexible lifestyle, but more importantly, I love the idea of providing temporary care for dogs awaiting their permanent forever homes."
Balancing Flexibility with Philanthropy
Since retiring from professional swimming in 2021 following the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Simmonds has dedicated substantial time to charitable causes, including her ongoing work with Dogs Trust. The organization actively seeks new foster carers to help accommodate the surge in interest for dog ownership that typically follows the annual Crufts spectacle.
"Dogs Trust performs remarkable work with adoptions, but their fostering program is equally vital," Simmonds elaborated. "A dog transitions from kennel life to a domestic environment—this arrangement might be short-term, long-term, or specifically tailored for animals requiring additional medical attention. Fostering dramatically enhances a dog's quality of life during their transitional period."
The Paralympian, who received an OBE in 2013 for her services to Paralympic sport, emphasized the psychological benefits for the animals: "It helps dogs acclimatize to family living and home environments, providing respite from kennel life while they await permanent adoption. This preparation significantly improves their chances of successful long-term placement."
Statistical Need and Personal Preparation
According to Dogs Trust statistics, 3,625 dogs were placed in foster care during 2024 alone. However, the charity urgently requires more foster carers in 2026 to meet growing demand, welcoming assistance for any duration that volunteers can provide.
Simmonds is currently navigating the fostering application process with characteristic diligence. "There's a thorough procedure to ensure both the dog's happiness and compatibility with my circumstances," she noted. "Dogs Trust has wonderful staff who offer guidance and support throughout, including behaviorists who assess each dog's wellbeing and suitability."
A Lifelong Animal Lover's Journey
Ellie Simmonds' connection to animals traces back to her childhood in Walsall, where she grew up surrounded by various pets—though notably without canine companionship due to her father's allergies. "Our family always had numerous animals," she recalled with amusement. "During my childhood, we kept guinea pigs, birds, a cat, and even a horse—practically everything except a dog. My aunt owned several dogs, so I grew up around Weimaraners and Border Collies. I once jokingly asked my mother if we could trade my dad for a dog!"
Since retiring from competitive swimming, Simmonds has expanded her public profile through diverse ventures. Her 2022 appearance on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Nikita Kuzmin, saw her progress to week seven of the competition. Additionally, her documentary filmmaking has earned critical acclaim—Finding My Secret Family, which explored her search for her birth mother after being adopted at three months old, won a BAFTA in 2023.
Crufts Experience and Canine Connections
During her Crufts hosting duties, Simmonds engaged deeply with the canine world, even baking special dog cakes for competitors. She expressed particular admiration for Eurasier breeds and enjoyed both the Pastoral and "small but mighty" Toy groups. "I was fascinated learning about dogs with swimming-friendly characteristics," she shared. "One of my favourite Crufts aspects is the discovery dog area, which offers opportunities to interact with numerous breeds. We always have tremendous fun."
Charity Perspective on Fostering Impact
Erin Farmer, Volunteering Development Officer at Dogs Trust, highlighted the profound benefits of fostering: "Fostering a dog for Dogs Trust represents an immensely rewarding experience. It allows individuals to enjoy canine companionship without long-term commitment, while the charity covers all essential costs and provides ongoing support. Foster carers play a crucial role in offering dogs loving environments where they receive individual attention and home comforts as they prepare for permanent adoption."
Farmer continued: "Research demonstrates that even brief periods in domestic settings substantially benefit kennel-housed dogs, reducing stress and helping organizations better understand each dog's behavior in home environments. This not only improves canine wellbeing but also enhances successful rehoming prospects. Fostering provides specialized care for puppies, dogs recovering from medical procedures, or those needing behavioral support. Simultaneously, each foster placement creates space in our centers for the next dog in need."
"Dogs Trust remains committed to assisting as many dogs as possible, and expanding our foster carer network is essential to this mission," Farmer concluded. "By opening your home temporarily, you can make a life-changing difference in a dog's journey toward a happy, permanent home."
Ellie Simmonds' journey from Paralympic champion to television presenter and now prospective dog foster carer illustrates her multifaceted commitment to giving back—whether through athletic achievement, documentary filmmaking, or animal welfare advocacy.
