Belgium Investigates Eden Hazard Over Gambling Firm Ambassador Role
Eden Hazard Investigated for Gambling Firm Ambassador Role

Former Chelsea football star Eden Hazard could face significant repercussions after accepting an ambassadorial role with a gambling company that is blacklisted in his home country of Belgium. The 35-year-old retired winger, who boasts 27 million Instagram followers, recently shared a video announcing his partnership with Stake, a global betting firm.

Strict Advertising Prohibition in Belgium

The Belgian Gaming Commission has confirmed it will investigate Hazard's association with Stake, as advertising for gambling is strictly prohibited within Belgium. A spokesman for the Commission, Stefaan Savenberg, stated that they will examine whether Hazard's promotional activities are targeting the Belgian market.

'We will examine whether the advertising by Eden Hazard is targeting the Belgian market. Advertising for gambling is prohibited in Belgium,' Savenberg said. If the Commission determines that Hazard is indeed targeting Belgian audiences, he will receive a formal notice to sever ties with Stake. 'If this does not happen, a sanction could be considered,' Savenberg added.

Stake's Blacklisted Status and Hazard's Role

Stake is one of several companies on the Belgian Gaming Commission's official blacklist and does not hold a licence to operate in the country. Hazard joins a roster of former footballers, including Iker Casillas, Sergio Aguero, and Patrice Evra, who serve as ambassadors for the company.

Upon announcing his partnership, Hazard expressed enthusiasm, saying, 'I am looking forward to connecting with fans in meaningful new ways and sharing, with Stake, moments of adrenaline and the pure joy of football.'

Hazard's Illustrious Career and Post-Retirement Activities

Eden Hazard is enshrined in the Premier League Hall of Fame, having scored 85 goals for Chelsea and helping the club secure six major trophies during his seven-year tenure. His subsequent move to Real Madrid was marred by injuries and poor form, leading to his retirement from professional football in 2023.

Since retiring, Hazard has occasionally appeared on the pitch for charity matches. He participated in the Match for Hope event in January, which was the third installment of such initiatives. These charity matches are reported to have raised over £15 million for disadvantaged children across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

The investigation by Belgian authorities highlights the ongoing tension between global gambling endorsements and national regulations, putting Hazard's post-career ventures under scrutiny.
