A convicted domestic violence offender has resigned from his position as club patron of a prominent Australian football club after only three days in the role. South Fremantle Football Club recently announced the appointment of Rory Vassallo, founder of Great Beginnings childcare and former owner of the Perth Heat baseball team, as patron until 2028.
Conviction and Immediate Backlash
Vassallo was convicted of aggravated assault against his ex-partner following a heated argument outside her family home in 2022. On March 21, the club released an official statement confirming that the father-of-two would no longer serve as patron.
'Rory has been a long-standing and deeply valued contributor to South Fremantle, having supported the club over many years as a sponsor, board member and trustee,' a club spokesperson stated. 'The club acknowledges and sincerely thanks Rory for his ongoing commitment and contribution.'
Club's Initial Support and Reversal
The club confirmed that it had supported Vassallo throughout this period and respected his decision to step down. South Fremantle Football Club reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all players, staff, and members, expressing optimism for the upcoming season.
Vassallo indicated that the decision was ultimately made in the best interests of the club, thanking the team for what he described as 'open and respectful dialogue' during the process.
Victim's Concerns and Public Condemnation
His victim expressed that it was 'deeply concerning' that South Fremantle initially supported Vassallo's appointment. 'Even after criticism, the club maintained its position,' she told The West Australian. 'This conduct sends a dangerous message that domestic violence is not only tolerated, but that accountability is optional.'
Before Vassallo's resignation, South Fremantle Football Club had characterized his conduct as an 'uncharacteristic error of judgement.' WA Football, the governing body overseeing the WAFL league, strongly condemned Vassallo's appointment and urged the club to reconsider their decision.
Details of the 2022 Assault Incident
In 2024, court proceedings revealed that the argument between Vassallo and the woman erupted over a mobile phone. Vassallo had picked the woman up from a party before driving to her apartment complex.
As the woman exited the car, Vassallo chased her, grabbed her shoulder, and ripped her handbag from her arm, causing her middle finger to bend backwards. Vassallo then removed her phone from the bag before throwing the bag on the ground.
When the woman attempted to retrieve her belongings, Vassallo pushed her away, prompting her to jump into his car. She refused to exit the vehicle until he returned the phone.
Legal Outcome and Aftermath
Vassallo's lawyer, Mark Andrews, argued that his client never intended to harm his former partner and that the offence was 'not indicative of how he treated her or all women.' Vassallo was fined $1500 and granted a spent conviction.
The swift resignation highlights ongoing tensions between community expectations and institutional support for individuals with criminal convictions, particularly in roles of public prominence within sporting organizations.
