Sir Neville Trotter, the Conservative MP who represented Tynemouth for 23 years, has died peacefully at home on June 25 at the age of 94. His family has paid tribute to him as a 'devoted' public servant and 'a man of the North East to his core'.
A life of public service
Born on 27 January 1932 to Captain Alexander Trotter and Elizabeth Winifred Trotter, Sir Neville was educated at King's College, Durham, and the Newcastle college of the University of Durham, where he earned a degree in commerce. He became a chartered accountant in Newcastle and later a partner in a firm that would become part of Grant Thornton, where he remained a consultant until 2005.
His political career began in 1963 when he was elected to Newcastle City Council, chairing its Finance and Transport Committees. He also sat on the Tyne and Wear County Council and served as Vice Chairman of the Northumberland Police Authority. After an unsuccessful bid for the Consett seat in 1970, he was elected MP for Tynemouth in February 1974, holding the seat through six general elections until 1997.
Parliamentary and military contributions
At Westminster, Sir Neville served on the Expenditure, Transport and Defence select committees, and as Military Secretary of the Conservative Aviation Committee. He was the most recent Conservative to represent a Tyne and Wear constituency. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, he completed a short service commission in the Royal Air Force and flew with the RAF. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.
After leaving Parliament, he held several armed forces roles, including Honorary Colonel of the Royal Marines Reserve and of Durham Army Cadet Force. He also served as an adviser to the House of Lords all-party defence group.
Honours and family
Sir Neville was knighted in 1997 and appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear the same year. He served as High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear in 2004. He is survived by his wife Caroline (Tiggy), their daughter Sophie, and grandsons Toby and Hugo. In a written tribute, Tiggy said he will be remembered as a 'devoted public servant, a steadfast friend to all who serve in uniform, and a proud son of the North East'.
The North Tyneside Conservative Party also paid tribute, stating: 'It is with sadness that we learn of the passing of former Tynemouth MP Sir Neville Trotter at the age of 94. He will be remembered for his commitment to public life and his service to both Tynemouth and the wider North East.'
