Australian tennis player Destanee Aiava has announced her retirement from professional tennis at the end of 2026, launching a scathing attack on the sport's culture in a social media post. The 25-year-old described tennis as 'racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn't fit the mould'.
Aiava, who reached a career-high ranking of 147 in 2017, said she felt 'so far behind everyone else' and questioned whether the sacrifices were worth it. She also directed expletive-laden criticism at online trolls who targeted her appearance and results, saying: 'Fuck you to every single gambler who's sent me hate or death threats.'
The former junior prodigy, who burst onto the scene as a teenager, recalled being inspired by Serena Williams. She reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2017 but has struggled to maintain that level, currently ranked 321st. Aiava said the trajectory of her career changed after trusting 'the wrong people' at age 17.
Aiava has not played a competitive match since January 2025, when she was eliminated in the first round of Australian Open women's doubles. She plans to pursue a future 'led by purpose, creativity and passion' after tennis.
