Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White has issued a direct appeal to fans, urging them not to let political differences drive them away from the sport. In a candid interview with CBS News, White emphasised that authenticity and mutual respect should prevail over partisan divides.
Political Neutrality in the Octagon
White, a known friend and supporter of President Donald Trump, stressed that his personal political views should not influence fan enjoyment of UFC events. "Just be authentic," he told CBS Sunday Morning. "You don't have to agree with me, and you don't have to like it, and I don't have to agree with you, but we can all still just get along. That's how this is supposed to work."
A Costly White House Spectacle
Despite this call for unity, UFC's parent company, TKO Group, faces significant financial implications from its political connections. During a fourth-quarter earnings call, TKO President and COO Mark Shapiro revealed the company anticipates losing approximately $30 million on an upcoming UFC event scheduled for the South Lawn of the White House.
This special fight, set for June 14 to coincide with President Trump's 80th birthday and the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, is expected to cost around $60 million. Shapiro described the event as a "one-timer" and justified the projected loss to shareholders as a strategic long-term investment rather than an immediate profit generator.
White's Relationship with Trump
White's association with the current president is well-documented. He has hosted Trump at UFC events, spoken at Republican National Conventions, and attended Trump's second inauguration. According to White, he maintains monthly contact with the president, though he insists their conversations avoid politics. "I don't talk politics with him," White told the Wall Street Journal. "And the only time I talk business with him is fights."
The UFC boss has confirmed the White House event directly with the Trump family, revealing an ambitious plan where fighters would walk from the Oval Office to the octagon. However, whether this specific detail remains part of the final arrangement is currently unclear.
Focus on Sporting Excellence
Amid the political and financial discussions, White maintains that his primary objective is delivering top-tier entertainment. "My focus is to find the best up-and-coming talent in the world, do the best matchmaking to put on the best fights possible, give people the best live event in-house and on TV," he stated. "And as long as I don't mess those up, it's tough to blow it."
The event comes at a time when Paramount, CBS News' parent company, has secured a landmark 7-year, $7.7 billion deal to become the exclusive broadcaster for all UFC events, adding another layer of commercial significance to the league's operations.
