Burnham must respond to State Pension age 65 petition

The UK Government must now issue an official response after a parliamentary petition calling for the State Pension age to be reduced to 65 surpassed its required threshold of 10,000 signatures.

The public campaign comes during a wider transformation of retirement policies under Andy Burnham, who earlier this week outlined long-term structural reforms to the state pension framework.

Triple lock changes proposed

On Tuesday, 29 September, the Prime Minister unveiled proposals to break the triple lock following the next general election to help finance a new National Care Service in England.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester also revealed that low-income pensioners would not have to pay income tax during this Parliament.

Petition launched in September

Now, it seems Andy Burnham will need to consider another possible modification to the regulations governing the state pension framework. On 16 September, Michelle Gill launched a petition on the parliamentary website, pressing the government to lower the State Pension age to 65 for all citizens throughout the UK, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The demands to reverse the retirement age trajectory stand in direct opposition to existing legislation.

The State Pension age is presently increasing from 66 to 67 through a gradual process. This statutory rise is set to impact new retirees based on their specific date of birth.

Petition argues for dignified retirement

Ms Gill's petition argues that reducing the threshold would enable people to "retire with dignity and avoid hardship", highlighting that many individuals aged 65 to 67 struggle with poor health, restricted employment opportunities and significant caring responsibilities.

It further suggests that earlier retirement could open up employment opportunities for younger people entering the workforce.

Having swiftly exceeded the 10,000-signature milestone, the UK Parliament petitions portal has officially confirmed that the Government will be required to respond to the petition.

Should the petition go on to reach 100,000 signatures, it will be put forward for a full parliamentary debate. It is due to remain open until March 16, 2027.
