Joseph Baena Achieves Professional Bodybuilder Status Following Father's Legacy
Joseph Baena, the 28-year-old son of Hollywood icon and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, has officially entered the ranks of professional bodybuilding. This milestone comes after Baena secured victory at the INBA Iron Gladiator Classic Physique competition in California over the weekend, marking a significant step in his burgeoning athletic career.
A Rapid Rise to Professional Standing
Baena's journey to professional status has been remarkably swift. Just seven days prior to his California triumph, he made a stunning debut in Denver, Colorado, where he clinched three titles: the Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavy Weight Class, Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, and Men’s Classic Physique Novice. This back-to-back success underscores his dedication and rapid progression in the sport.
To celebrate his latest achievement, Baena took to Instagram, sharing images of himself on stage holding a sword and shield while flexing his well-defined muscles. This theatrical display highlighted both his physical prowess and his flair for dramatic presentation, reminiscent of his father's showmanship during his own bodybuilding heyday.
Training Alongside a Legend
Joseph Baena has been training alongside his famous father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, now 78, at the iconic Gold's Gym in Venice Beach. The former Governor of California has been actively involved in his son's development, even helping him perfect signature poses from his own competitive past. This mentorship has provided Baena with invaluable insights and techniques from one of bodybuilding's most celebrated figures.
"My dad is old-school; he doesn't believe in handouts. He believes hard work pays off, and so do I," Baena told Men's Health in 2022. "I love the word honour, and I'm very prideful in the sense that if I use my dad's contacts or ask him for favours, I wonder what honour is that gonna bring me?"
A Complex Family History
Joseph Baena is the product of a secret relationship between Arnold Schwarzenegger and his former housekeeper, Mildred 'Patty' Baena. The revelation came in 2011 when Joseph was just 13 years old, leading to the end of Schwarzenegger's 25-year marriage to journalist Maria Shriver. Their divorce was finalised in 2021.
In her poetry book I Am Maria, Shriver expressed the profound impact of the divorce, writing, "it broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me." She added, "Without my marriage, my parents, a job, the dam of my lifelong capital-D Denial just blew apart."
Following in Famous Footsteps
Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoyed an illustrious career as a competitive bodybuilder, winning seven Mr. Olympia titles before transitioning to Hollywood stardom and later politics. Of his five children—Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher with Maria Shriver, and Joseph with Mildred Baena—Joseph has most closely followed his father's passion for bodybuilding.
Despite primarily growing up with his mother in Bakersfield, California, Baena has forged a strong bond with his father through fitness. Schwarzenegger gifted him a copy of The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, which he co-authored in 1985, further cementing their connection over shared interests.
Joseph Baena, a Pepperdine University graduate who has also appeared in films like Dog Patrol: Operation Santa Paws, now looks ahead to a promising career in professional bodybuilding, carrying forward a legacy built on discipline, hard work, and familial inspiration.
