Fox League's Braith Anasta Clashes with Dragons Chairman Over Media Criticism
Anasta Fires Back at Dragons Chairman Over Media Criticism

Fox League presenter and NRL legend Braith Anasta has launched a fierce counterattack against St George Illawarra Dragons chairman Andrew Lancaster, following Lancaster's pointed criticism of media coverage surrounding the club's dire situation. The exchange comes as the Dragons endure a devastating 11-match losing streak, culminating in the departure of former coach Shane Flanagan after a winless 0-7 start to the 2026 NRL season.

Lancaster's Media Tirade

Andrew Lancaster, who has extensive media experience himself, publicly blamed journalists for their handling of the club's struggles. In a stunning tirade, Lancaster acknowledged that some coverage was deserved but condemned other reports as poor or driven by personal agendas. "I've been in media longer than most. Our coverage of this great game, of this great club, should be better," Lancaster stated, pointing the finger directly at media representatives.

Anasta's Forceful Response

Braith Anasta, currently hosting NRL 360 on Fox Sports, did not hesitate to fire back at Lancaster's comments. Speaking on his program, Anasta accused the Dragons chairman of pushing a convenient narrative to distract from his own leadership failures. "I think it's a convenient narrative Andrew Lancaster is pushing to try and smother his own poor leadership and decisions that he has made," Anasta declared.

Anasta continued his verbal assault, describing Lancaster's approach as weak and unaccountable. "To try and point his finger at the media and me, indirectly, I thought was weak as piss, just like his press conference was. He took no accountability today," Anasta said, revealing he had taken the criticism personally.

Leadership Accountability Questioned

The Fox League presenter emphasized that Lancaster had missed a crucial opportunity to demonstrate leadership. "He had an opportunity to have some backbone, to have some balls and sit there and say I've made some poor decisions ... we've got it wrong at times," Anasta argued. Instead, Anasta claimed Lancaster attempted to blame everyone except himself for the club's record-breaking losing streak.

"You don't need to be Einstein to work out that they've created records by losing 11 games in a row," Anasta added, highlighting the objective reality of the Dragons' performance issues.

Coaching Changes Amid Turmoil

The heated exchange occurred against the backdrop of significant organizational changes at St George Illawarra. Following Shane Flanagan's departure, the club announced that former assistant coach and club legend Dean Young would take over as interim coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. Young, who played 209 games for the joint venture and was instrumental in their 2010 NRL Premiership victory, now faces the daunting task of turning around the struggling team.

This leadership transition adds another layer to the ongoing controversy, as the Dragons organization grapples with both on-field performance issues and off-field public relations challenges. The clash between media representatives and club leadership underscores the intense scrutiny facing professional sports organizations during periods of sustained poor performance.
