Vice President JD Vance has publicly blamed Donald Trump's Iran war for the Republican Party's disastrous performance in the midterm elections, as he weighs his own political future and a possible run for president in 2028.
In a nationwide defeat, Democrats ousted Republicans from coast to coast, with many surprising results in between, as voters rejected the president's party in favour of a promise of change for the country.
Vance points to the war as the cause
Vance has been quick to attribute the loss to the conflict in Iran. In a post on X, he listed the reasons the party lost and appealed to Republican voters to give the party another chance.
"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," Vance said.
His message was that supporters of the Iran war should take responsibility for the defeat, with Trump having championed the conflict.
A call for honesty from war backers
"If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest," he said.
Vance's remarks signal a notable break from the president as he considers his political future and a potential presidential bid in 2028.
