US Lawmakers Get £160k Annual Security Stipend Amid Rising Threats
US lawmakers receive £160k security stipend amid threats

American politicians on Capitol Hill are set to receive substantial new security resources, including significant financial support and emergency technology, in response to escalating fears about political violence targeting elected officials.

Enhanced Security Measures

A comprehensive new security programme will launch next month, providing representatives with both financial resources and technological tools to protect themselves and their families. The initiative comes as multiple high-profile political attacks have left legislators genuinely concerned for their safety.

The programme recently received $203 million in funding through the latest government spending bill, which also ended the recent government shutdown. This substantial investment underscores the seriousness with which congressional leaders are treating the security threats facing lawmakers.

Financial Protection for Politicians

According to an email obtained by the Daily Mail, House Sergeant at Arms William McFarland announced that each member of Congress will receive up to $20,000 per month to hire personal security through the Member Personal Security Programme.

"Beginning December 1, 2025, the Member Personal Security Programme will provide each Member up to $20,000 per month to be used in a Member's district, state, or while travelling," McFarland informed lawmakers this week. The programme officially launches on December 1.

There are restrictions, however. Personal security personnel are not permitted to operate within the Capitol complex or on Capitol Grounds, where the Capitol Police maintain exclusive jurisdiction.

Additional Protective Measures

Beyond the monthly stipend, the enhanced security plan includes several other protective measures:

  • A new mobile application called the House Member Mobile Duress Programme
  • Home security enhancement coverage including fences, gates and ballistic windows
  • A $350 monthly stipend for security system monitoring and maintenance

The mobile app provides real-time alerts to law enforcement in a member's immediate vicinity when activated, while also notifying Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms. The application can signal distress discreetly in situations where openly calling law enforcement might not be possible, according to the programme details.

Context of Rising Threats

This security expansion comes against a backdrop of increasing politically-motivated violence that has profoundly affected the political community. Recent incidents that have shaken lawmakers include:

  • Two attempted assassinations on President Donald Trump
  • The shooting of conservative figure Charlie Kirk
  • Multiple attacks targeting Minnesota lawmakers

These security concerns have directly influenced career decisions, with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene citing safety fears as a factor in her recent resignation announcement. She acknowledged receiving countless death threats and personal attacks.

The situation intensified recently when half a dozen Democratic lawmakers who urged US troops to defy orders received death threats following a Truth Social post by Donald Trump describing their actions as "seditious" and noting such infractions are "punishable by death." Some of these legislators required additional Capitol Police protection as a result.

The new security programme builds upon a pilot scheme launched earlier this year by Speaker Mike Johnson, which was well-received and provided the framework for this more comprehensive initiative. As political tensions continue to simmer, these measures represent the most significant enhancement to lawmaker security in recent memory.
