Trump warns midterm defeat could lead to impeachment

Donald Trump said he will be “impeached” if the Republicans lose the upcoming midterm elections in November. While campaigning in South Carolina, Mr Trump warned supporters that they stood to “lose everything” if Democrats were to regain control of Congress during the final two years of his presidency.

Stark warning to supporters

Speaking on Friday, Mr Trump framed the prospect of the election outcome in particularly stark terms, highlighting the challenges he could face if Congress fell under opposition control, including difficulties in advancing legislation and the loss of support from a compliant legislature, reports The Telegraph.

He told supporters at a rally in Myrtle Beach: “I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me. They have no idea why.”

Campaigning for Darline Graham

Mr Trump was campaigning in South Carolina on behalf of Darline Graham, who was appointed to the Senate in July following the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham. Although she is seeking re-election, she was unable to secure an outright victory in the primary and now faces a run-off election on Tuesday.

Her campaign has faced scrutiny following a debate on August 25, during which she acknowledged that she was “not that informed on national security” when questioned about Taiwan, a response that drew widespread criticism.

Economic warnings and policy stakes

On Friday, the US president argued that a lack of Republican voter turnout would allow his political opponents to damage the economy and reverse many of the accomplishments achieved during his administration. He urged supporters to back Republican candidates, warning that a victory for his opponents could undermine his policy agenda and undo key achievements from his time in office.

“If we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts, you’re going to lose everything that we’ve done,” he said. “We’ve got the biggest tax cuts in history. Think about no tax on tips, no tax on social security for our seniors, no tax on overtime. All of that’s going to be gone.

“Your taxes are going to go up. Your pay is going to go down. Your jobs are going to be lost. They’re going to end up closing up. Your businesses are going to flee.”
