Trump Claims 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' Is a Real Disease at White House Event
Trump Insists 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' Is a Real Disease

President Donald Trump has once again claimed that opposition to his presidency is a sign of mental illness, declaring during a White House event that 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' is a real disease. Speaking at an Oval Office event focused on maternal health initiatives on Monday, Trump accused Democrats who voted against his partisan spending package last year of suffering from the condition.

Trump's Remarks on the Condition

'They've got serious Trump Derangement, which actually is a disease. I'm hearing it is actually a disease. It's an honor,' Trump said. The president was referring to a term coined by MAGA-aligned media figures who routinely dismiss political opposition as a symptom of mental illness rather than a principled stance.

Shortly after his comments, the White House official X account posted a mock prescription for the non-existent condition, advising treatment by 'trusting in Trump,' listening to the U.S. national anthem, limiting consumption of 'fake news' — a term Trump uses for legitimate media — and cautioning against being a 'panican.'

Origins of the Term

The pejorative phrase is an adaptation of 'Bush Derangement Syndrome,' coined by conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer during the George W. Bush administration in 2003. Krauthammer, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist turned political commentator, defined it as 'the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush.'

Two decades later, 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' has been frequently deployed against Democrats and other critics as a way to delegitimize opposition by suggesting they are incapable of rational political discussion. In one notorious example, Trump falsely claimed that the death of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Reiner was due to their 'incurable affliction' with TDS, when in fact they were stabbed to death, allegedly by their son.

Context of the Remarks

Trump's comments came a day before a sensitive state visit to China and hours after a late-night Truth Social posting session where he shared AI-generated images and posts from MAGA loyalists. These included messages describing him as 'The Greatest of All Time,' declaring 'Thank God for Trump,' and amplifying a poll he claimed showed he surpassed Ronald Reagan as the most beloved Republican president.

One post depicted Trump's face carved into Mount Rushmore alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Another attacked Democrats as having 'no solutions,' 'no policies,' 'no joy,' and 'no love for America.'
