The Manchester Evening News has taken umbrage with Donald Trump after the US President referred to Greater Manchester as a “town” in a recent interview. Lifestyle editor Dianne Bourne penned a passionate response defending the region’s status as a major global city.
Trump’s Dismissive Comment
When asked about Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor widely tipped as a future prime minister, Trump replied: “I don’t know anything… I see that he was, I guess, the mayor of a… town?” The comment, reported in Tuesday’s Mancunian Way, drew immediate criticism.
Bourne wrote: “A TOWN Mr President? I mean Manchester is one of the UK's biggest cities, second in size only to London, so no, it's not just ‘a…. town’. This is a thriving metropolis, whose people have shaped the world in so many meaningful ways.” She argued that how Manchester is portrayed internationally matters, especially as Burnham could become PM within weeks.
Free Bus Travel for Young People?
In other news, Manchester council leader Bev Craig has announced plans to introduce free bus travel for all 11- to 18-year-olds across Greater Manchester if she succeeds Andy Burnham as metro mayor. The exclusive story by Rob Williams and Beth Abbit highlights Craig’s transport ambitions.
In a separate interview with Beth Abbit in Cringle Park, Levenshulme, Craig discussed her upbringing on a council estate near Belfast, how Manchester helped her find her voice, and her belief that “not all roads should lead to the city centre.”
Thunderstorms and Weekend Walks
A thunderstorm early Thursday morning startled many, including pets. Reporter Stephen Topping compiled readers' photos of lightning strikes across the region. For those seeking cooler activities, tourism writer Liv Clarke recommended five shady walks in Greater Manchester, including Chorlton Water Park, Prestwich Clough, and Healey Dell.
Weather and Travel
The weekend forecast promises slightly cooler temperatures after a hot spell. However, Salford Central station will be closed on Saturday and Sunday due to engineering works. Replacement bus services will operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Bolton, and between Manchester Victoria and Wigan North Western on Sunday.
