Tom Grennan Accused of Glory-Hunting Over Coventry City

Tom Grennan has been accused of glory-hunting and jumping on the bandwagon after celebrating Coventry City's promotion to the Premier League, despite previously claiming allegiance to Manchester United and Luton Town. The English singer and songwriter was prominently featured during the jubilant scenes following Coventry's promotion, speaking to Sky Sports News about his love for the club. He also performed at the Coventry City parade on Monday as fans celebrated Frank Lampard's side's achievement.

Grennan's Claims of Loyalty

In a live television interview, Grennan stated: 'My grandma is from Coventry so I've always had that link to Cov and in 2016 went to my first Coventry match at the Ricoh and fell in love with it. This was like, League Two football (Coventry were actually in League One at the time) and I could see what the football club meant to the people. The football wasn't the best but I could see the spirit of the community and the hope was there. I fell in love with it and get goosebumps. I get goosebumps just talking about it. It just felt like this was my club, this is the team I should support. And obviously with my grandma being from Cov it lined up. I've not looked back since.'

Previous Allegiances Revealed

However, fans were quick to point out that Grennan had previously professed to being a Manchester United fan. In 2018, he participated in the club's official 'My United' series, where he said: 'It's always been drilled into me. I was bought a Man United babygro when I was a little baby – I was brought up with it. I've got a lot of Irish family and a lot of them are big United supporters. All my cousins made me watch DVDs of old United games and the matches on television. And I don't know what it is, but I have always been drawn to the Manchester United badge. Maybe it's the devil on it that I like!' He also named Paul Scholes as his favourite player, describing him as 'a massive influence.'

Additionally, Grennan has spoken of his connection to Luton Town, having been on their books as a youngster. When a fan questioned his allegiance on X, he replied: 'Played for Luton, always look for the results, my second team x.'

Fan Backlash

Social media users were quick to criticise Grennan for his apparent lack of loyalty. One wrote: 'Mad innit, never heard a peep from him about them prior. Will probably be a Man United fan again next year after they get relegated.' Another posted: 'Tom Grennan supports 3 teams, how can anyone take him seriously. He has been quoted as supporting Man Utd, Luton and now Coventry. Very weird.' A third joked: 'My Nan supports Coventry bringing new meaning to the old “I have an Irish Granny”.'

Grennan, who quit football to focus on music, has since found success with hits like 'Found What I've Been Looking For', which was used by Sky Sports as their intro music.
