Sutton Hits Back at Lineker Over Celtic VAR Controversy
Sutton Hits Back at Lineker Over Celtic VAR Call

Chris Sutton has hit back at Gary Lineker after the former Match of the Day host described Celtic's late penalty at Motherwell as 'the worst VAR decision I've seen'. The Scottish champions kept their title hopes alive in dramatic fashion, with Kelechi Ihenacho scoring a 98th-minute winner to secure a 3-2 victory.

The Controversial VAR Call

Motherwell midfielder Sam Nicholson was penalised for handball, despite no appeals from Celtic players. Referee John Beaton awarded the penalty after a VAR review, sparking widespread debate. Lineker tweeted: 'This might be the worst VAR decision I've seen (and there's a lot of competition). Extraordinary given the significance.'

Sutton's Response

Ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton defended the decision, stating: 'It's what VAR is there for...' He also criticised the reaction from many high-profile figures, calling it 'way over the top'. Sutton wrote on social media: 'John Beaton was advised to go to the monitor and saw that the ball hit the arm in an unnatural position. Bottom line is people would hate to see Celtic win the title again and that is all.'

The late goal means Celtic trail leaders Hearts by just one point going into the final day, with a superior goal difference potentially decisive. Hearts boss Derek McInnes was furious, saying: 'It's disgusting. We're up against it, we're up against everybody. I don't think it's a penalty.'

Title Race Implications

Hearts, who have been top for much of the season and already beaten Celtic at Parkhead, are aiming for their first league title since 1960. The controversial penalty has intensified the rivalry, with Sutton insisting the fallout is driven by a desire to see Celtic's dominance ended.
