Rubio Warns NATO Allies Denying US Base Access Must Be 'Examined'
Rubio: Denying US Base Access a Problem for NATO

Senator Marco Rubio has issued a stark warning that if NATO allies refuse permission for the United States to use its bases for projecting force, that situation must be examined. Speaking after a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Rubio addressed concerns over President Donald Trump's threats to pull US troops from Europe.

Rubio's Stance on NATO

Rubio stated that the decision ultimately rests with the president, but he emphasized his longstanding support for NATO. He noted that one of the alliance's key advantages is the logistical ability to project power from bases in Europe during contingencies. However, he highlighted a specific instance where Spain denied the US use of its bases for a critical mission, which impeded the operation and created unnecessary dangers.

Consequences of Denial

Rubio argued that if the primary reason for US presence in NATO—to have forces deployed in Europe for projection—is undermined by some members denying access, then that is a problem that must be addressed. He reiterated that the president will make the final decision, and there is no new development yet.

Troop Withdrawal from Germany

Rubio also clarified that the partial withdrawal of US troops from Germany accounts for less than 14% of the total US troop presence there. He described it as part of a pre-programmed plan to shift some burden within NATO, rather than a drastic change in policy.
