Ratcliffe softens stance with Carrick before Man Utd decision

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Manchester United, appears to have adopted a different approach with interim manager Michael Carrick compared to his predecessors. Carrick, who returned to Old Trafford in January on an interim basis, has revealed that he has held 'chats' with Ratcliffe ahead of a decision on his future in the summer.

Carrick's Interim Tenure

The former United midfielder has overseen an improvement in the team's form since taking over, leading to calls for him to be appointed permanently. The final decision will rest partly with Ratcliffe, who has now had three managers since his takeover in early 2024. Carrick's relationship with the co-owner could be a key factor.

Carrick on Ratcliffe

Speaking ahead of the Premier League match against Brentford, Carrick said: "He came in. We had a chat. We had a cup of tea. Casual chat, to be honest, it was nice to see him showing his support, obviously. That was it. It was quite informal, but it was nice to see him. I think as a football club we're hugely connected all the way through."

This contrasts with the experiences of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. Ten Hag, who left the club after poor results, previously revealed that communication with Ratcliffe "fell away" during a period of uncertainty. He recounted a meeting in Ibiza where Ratcliffe said they believed they had the best manager in-house but needed to discuss working relationships.

Amorim, who succeeded Ten Hag, had a more direct relationship. Ratcliffe told the Times: "I really, really like Ruben. Every time I go to the training ground, I sit down and have a cup of coffee with him and tell him where it's going wrong, and he tells me to f*** off. I like him. Give the guy a break."

Carrick's rapport with Ratcliffe appears warmer, which could work in his favour. However, doubt remains over his position beyond this season. The United hierarchy, led by Ratcliffe, will make a decision as they plan for the 2026/27 campaign.
