A growing rift within the Democratic Party has come to light as progressive lawmakers, including New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, publicly criticised House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his unwavering support of Israel.
The conflict emerged after Jeffries, a key Democratic leader, signed a bipartisan letter endorsing Israel's military actions in Gaza. This move sparked outrage among progressive Democrats who advocate for a ceasefire and a more balanced approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Progressive Backlash
Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist representing Queens, took to social media to condemn Jeffries' stance, calling it "morally indefensible." Meanwhile, AOC and other members of "The Squad" have repeatedly pushed for the Biden administration to reconsider its unconditional support for Israel.
Party Divisions Widen
This public disagreement highlights the deepening divide between the Democratic Party's establishment wing and its progressive faction. While party leaders like Jeffries maintain traditional pro-Israel positions, younger progressive lawmakers are increasingly vocal in their criticism of Israeli policies and US support for them.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Democrats as they prepare for the 2024 elections, with the party struggling to maintain unity between its moderate and progressive bases.
