John Cleese has expressed his support for Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe, stating he trusts the politician more than any other leader. This came after an X post asking for the first word that came to mind above a picture of Lowe. Cleese responded: “I trust this man more than any of the other leaders.”
Lowe replied: “John Cleese is a patriot. His support for our rape-gang inquiry is appreciated.”
The comment received a mixed response online. Alastair Campbell, former Director of Communications for Tony Blair, responded: “In which case you have totally lost the plot.”
Political Evolution
Cleese previously described himself as “lightly Left of centre” and appeared in Liberal Democrat broadcasts in the 1990s. He turned down a peerage from Paddy Ashdown in 1999. In recent years, he became outspoken on political issues, supporting UKIP in 2014. In a 2014 interview with The Telegraph, he said he was “all for immigration” but concerned about “people who come here who really don’t like our culture”. He has also been vocal on grooming gangs, criticizing BBC coverage of a crowdfunding campaign led by Lowe earlier this year.
Restore Britain's Platform
Restore Britain was formed by Lowe after his exit from Reform UK and falling out with Nigel Farage. The party's website claims that “mass immigration, economic collapse, woke ideology, and the relentless creep of radical Islam” are responsible for Britain's “decline”. The party has a handful of councillors but has struggled in national elections. Its campaign in the Makerfield by-election was criticized by Farage for splitting the right-wing vote, making it easier for Andy Burnham to win his seat and the Labour leadership.
