ITV's newest reality game show, The Neighbourhood, premieres tonight, Friday, April 24, at 9pm, and fans of The Traitors may experience a strong sense of deja vu. Hosted by Graham Norton, the show features six real-life households moving into a self-contained street in the Peak District, aptly named "KeepYourEnemies Close." The goal: compete in high-stakes group challenges, navigate social dynamics, and avoid being voted out to win a £250,000 prize.
A Familiar Format?
The concept bears a striking resemblance to The Traitors, the BBC hit hosted by Claudia Winkleman. Swap the Peak District for the Scottish Highlands, cozy cottages for a sinister castle, and Norton for Winkleman, and the similarities are clear. The Traitors has become a cultural phenomenon, with its season four finale attracting 9.6 million viewers and Alan Carr's win drawing 11 million, making it the most-watched UK Traitors episode ever. ITV's attempt to replicate this success seems evident.
What Sets The Neighbourhood Apart?
Despite the comparisons, The Neighbourhood offers a distinct tone. Norton describes it as "wholesome" and "heartwarming," with moments that bring tears to his eyes. The setting is picture-perfect, with chocolate-box houses and a pond full of ducks, far removed from the dark, sinister vibes of The Traitors. The show focuses on over-the-fence gossip and humiliating games, making it ideal for easy primetime viewing.
However, if you prefer the dark, strategic intrigue of The Traitors, this ITV offering may not satisfy. Norton admitted that "things got heated" with tears and accusations of "snake," but the overall feel is more fairy tale than thriller.
Verdict
The Neighbourhood is worth a watch for fans of light-hearted reality competition, but it may not replace the addictive tension of The Traitors. For those who prefer evil stepmothers to sickly sweet princesses, stick with the original and wait for Celebrity Traitors later this year.
The Neighbourhood airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
