Infantino Handshake Backfires as Palestinian Refuses

FIFA President Gianni Infantino's attempt to orchestrate a handshake between Palestinian and Israeli delegates at the 76th FIFA Congress backfired, leading to an awkward moment on stage in Vancouver.

Refusal to Stand Together

Palestinian Football Federation President Jibril Rajoub refused to stand alongside Israel FA Vice-President Basim Sheikh Suliman after both were called to the stage by Infantino. Rajoub walked away from Infantino and Suliman, declining to participate in the symbolic gesture.

Infantino's Re-election Bid

Despite the embarrassment, Infantino confirmed his intention to seek a third full term as FIFA president in next year's election, which will take place at the FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco. He is expected to run unopposed. Infantino was first elected in 2016 as a reform candidate to replace Sepp Blatter, and changes to FIFA's statutes now allow him to remain in office for up to 15 years.

“I want to confirm I will be a candidate for the election for FIFA president next year,” Infantino said. “I wanted you to be the first to know. Thanks for your encouragement and support.”

Diplomatic Limits

Infantino has increasingly portrayed himself as an international statesman, but the incident highlighted the limits of his diplomatic influence. After Rajoub's refusal, Infantino returned to the stage and said: “We will work together, president Rajoub, vice-president Suliman. Let’s work together to give hope to the children. These are complex matters.”

Palestinian FA Vice-President Susan Shalabi explained Rajoub's refusal, stating: “I cannot shake the hand of someone the Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering.”
