Hundreds of individuals have been taken into custody in India's border state of West Bengal following a wave of post-election violence that has claimed at least five lives. The unrest erupted after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landmark victory in the state, defeating incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Historic BJP Victory Sparks Clashes
On 4 March, widespread violence and vandalism broke out across West Bengal after the BJP secured a historic win, breaking through the liberal stronghold that had been held by Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) since 2011. The victory further consolidated the saffron party's power ahead of the next general elections. Banerjee, a vocal critic of Modi, had served as chief minister for over a decade.
Suvendu Adhikari, a former close associate of Banerjee, was sworn in as the new chief minister on Saturday in Kolkata, with Modi in attendance. Tragically, one of Adhikari's aides, Chandranath Rath, was among those killed earlier in the week, shot dead by gunmen on a motorcycle. Adhikari expressed that the BJP was "shocked, pained, and hurt" by Rath's death, asserting that he was killed "because I defeated Mamata."
Escalation of Violence
Clashes between TMC and BJP supporters erupted in the state capital Kolkata and other areas shortly after the election results were announced on Monday. The situation deteriorated further when bulldozers demolished multiple structures in Kolkata's iconic New Market, and a statue of Vladimir Lenin was toppled in Murshidabad district.
BJP state leader Samik Bhattacharya told AFP, "Two of our workers were killed after the results of the elections were announced on Monday." The TMC denied any involvement in the killings and accused the BJP of vandalizing its party offices. In a statement, the TMC said, "Violence and political killings have no place in a democracy, and the guilty must be held accountable at the earliest."
Police Response and Arrests
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to AFP that four deaths had occurred in the clashes and that one officer had been shot in the leg. Kolkata Police Commissioner Siddh Nath Gupta reported that over 200 criminal cases have been registered across the state in connection with the violence, and 433 people have been arrested.
The gunmen who fired at Rath remain at large days after the incident, according to reports. Additionally, at least five BJP workers sustained injuries after crude bombs were thrown on Thursday in the North 24 Paraganas district. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to investigate and maintain order.
