Emmerdale viewers were stunned on Friday night as fan favourite Vanessa Woodfield made a surprise return to the soap, 14 months after her departure. The character, played by Michelle Hardwick, reappeared to support her best friend Rhona Goskirk amid a tense custody battle.
Vanessa left the Yorkshire Dales with her son Johnny for a dream job in Canada after splitting from girlfriend Suzy Merton. During her absence, Rhona became embroiled in a horrific custody dispute with her ex-husband Gus Malcolms over their daughter Ivy. This week, Charity Dingle urged Rhona to fight for her daughter, prompting Rhona to flee her family home with Ivy and seek refuge in a secluded cottage.
In Friday's episode, tensions escalated as Rhona ignored calls from her husband Marlon and mother Mary, with police involvement looming. In an unexpected twist, Vanessa arrived at the cottage with Johnny, unaware of the situation. Speaking to Metro, Michelle Hardwick revealed Vanessa's shock: 'She had no idea that she'd run off with the baby and essentially kidnap the child.'
Hardwick added: 'It's a massive shock to Vanessa because first of all she's thinking 'what the heck are you doing?' There's all blind panic going through her because she's like 'hang on, I'm here now, am I an accomplice? Am I gonna get done as well? What's gonna happen to Johnny?'
Michelle Hardwick, 47, has been away from the soap since November 2022 after giving birth to her daughter Betty with wife Kate Brooks, a producer on Emmerdale. The couple also share two-year-old son Teddy. Hardwick came out publicly in 2013 and married Brooks at Elvis Presley's Graceland in 2019.
