Andy Burnham has launched a sharp rebuke against Tony Blair, accusing the former Labour prime minister of being out of touch and partly responsible for the ascent of populist figures such as Nigel Farage. The Greater Manchester Mayor's criticism comes in response to Sir Tony's recent warning that Labour is “playing with fire” by adopting leftist policies and should instead embrace the “radical centre”.
Burnham's Counterargument
In his response, Mr Burnham argued that Sir Tony fails to recognise how growing inequality drives contemporary politics. He contended that centrist approaches have let voters down, leading many to abandon the political centre altogether. The mayor also took aim at what he described as Sir Tony's “obsession” with university education, advocating instead for a stronger emphasis on technical and vocational training.
Blair's Warning
Earlier, Sir Tony published an essay cautioning that Labour risks inflicting long-term damage on both the party and the country by lacking a coherent policy plan. He also stated that the United Kingdom is currently too weak to contemplate rejoining the European Union, dismissing any such discussion as premature.
The exchange highlights a deepening ideological rift within the Labour Party as it navigates its policy direction ahead of future elections.
