Drew Hutton, co-founder of the Australian Greens, has been expelled from the party after a dispute over comments deemed harmful to transgender people. The decision, upheld by state branch delegates on Sunday, ends Hutton's life membership and follows a lengthy internal process.
The party's Constitution and Arbitration Committee found that Hutton provided a platform for transphobic remarks on Facebook, despite not making such comments himself. Hutton refused to delete the posts, citing free speech, leading to a two-year standoff and eventual termination of his membership.
Queensland Greens convener Gemmia Burden said the decision reaffirms that trans rights are non-negotiable human rights and that party rules apply equally to all members. Greens leader Larissa Waters backed the outcome, calling it a matter of good governance.
Hutton, however, said the party has 'lost its way' and abandoned its mission for ecological sustainability. He is considering legal and political options, supported by former leaders Bob Brown and Christine Milne, who opposed his expulsion.
The dispute began in 2022 when Hutton criticised the party's moves to expel members over transphobic comments. His Facebook posts generated heated debate, leading to a complaint and suspension. Hutton's subsequent media interviews and continued social media activity ultimately led to his expulsion.
