Anti-Monarchy Protesters Rally Outside Buckingham Palace

Dozens of anti-monarchy demonstrators marched from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace in central London on Saturday, demanding the abolition of the British monarchy. Organised by the pressure group Republic, participants carried placards with slogans such as 'abolish the monarchy' and 'not my King'.

Protesters' Grievances

Elizabeth McIntyre, a Republic member, articulated her objection to the UK's class system and the inequality fostered by an unelected monarchy. She stated that the monarchy perpetuates a system of privilege that undermines democratic values.

Growing Momentum

Graham Smith, leader of Republic, claimed that the movement is gaining significant momentum, particularly following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the recent coronation of King Charles III. He asserted that public sentiment is shifting against the institution.

Speakers Address the Crowd

Speakers including writer Otto English, former Scottish Green Party co-leader Patrick Harvie, and former Liberal Democrat minister Norman Baker addressed the crowd, criticising the monarchy and advocating for an elected head of state. They highlighted arguments for a more egalitarian and representative political system.

Republic confirmed they will carry out further protests against the royal family, following arrests at previous events. The group plans to maintain pressure on the government to reconsider the monarchy's role in modern Britain.
