Angela Rayner outshines Andy Burnham in political power play

Angela Rayner is back in the political spotlight, and she is not holding back. After being fired from the cabinet by Keir Starmer over her tax return, she has returned with renewed confidence, throwing punches in every direction without concern for the consequences. Rayner is a political pugilist, and early evidence suggests Andy Burnham is not ready for the fight.

Rayner's Contradictions

Rayner's hypocrisy is on full display. She advocates scrapping Right to Buy, despite using it herself to purchase a discounted council house. She has also criticised MPs with second jobs, while earning tens of thousands from speaking engagements.

She slammed Nigel Farage's Reform UK for accepting donations from "sugar-daddy" crypto-billionaires, yet defended Labour's acceptance of money from wealthy donors like Lord Sainsbury (£18million), Gary Lubner (£8million), and Dale Vince (£5million), along with almost £43million from unions since 2020.

Housing and Immigration Stance

Rayner insists Labour aims to build 1.5million homes this parliament, while admitting there is only a "slim chance" of achieving it. As housing secretary, she has overstepped into immigration policy, clashing with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who is pushing for tougher immigration rules. Rayner called these rules "unBritish," backed by union support.

When asked if he was "Team Shabana" or "Team Angela," Burnham told LBC: "I'm both of them, I'm Team Angela and Shabana." This response has been criticised as weak, especially as Rayner continues to push her agenda.

Future Implications

Rayner is set to push new rules allowing councils to repossess long-term empty homes, introduce a tourist tax on hospitality, pursue unitary council reforms, and ease green belt restrictions for AI data centres. Tory shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: "Rayner is now dictating Britain's migration policy." Burnham may be riding high after his conference speech, but he must stand up to Rayner or risk being overrun.
