A huge majority of Daily Express readers reject Andy Burnham's shock Brexit reset proposal. This publication asked whether or not Britain should reverse its EU exit after the Prime Minister reignited the Brexit debate.
The PM promised in his first Labour Party conference speech as leader to set out options on the country’s ties to Brussels around the time of a UK-EU summit later this year. He later acknowledged this could include an option to go "all the way" and rejoin the bloc if that is what public opinion favoured.
Overwhelming rejection in Express poll
Express readers were asked whether they favour such a move, with an overwhelming 88% of 6,624 poll respondents saying "no".
Those in favour of a reversal made up 12% (773) of the total, with 42 respondents saying they didn't know if the UK should reverse Brexit or not.
Political opponents point to flaws
The results of our poll come as Mr Burnham's political opponents point out a glaring error in the Prime Minister's proposal.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the Labour leader’s positions on Brussels and devolution were at odds. He told reporters in Doncaster: "This is the pro-devolution prime minister.
"To even consider rejoining the single market, the customs union, let alone the European Union itself, is the opposite of devolution.
"[It's] a massive transfer of huge powers up to an authority, whereby there’s nothing Parliament could do to change any of it. So I find the whole thing totally contradictory."
Conservative leader calls it a distraction
Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, insisted rejoining the EU would not solve all the UK's problems.
She accused Mr Burnham of reigniting the debate over UK membership as a "distraction".
Asked whether she would rule out rejoining or returning to a customs union or single market, she said: "All of these things are being discussed by people who did not pay attention to what happened when we had the negotiations last time.
"We’re not going to get the same terms that we had. Does anybody really believe Andy Burnham is going to get Margaret Thatcher’s rebate back? This is all a distraction. We need to focus on sorting our economy out."
