A secretive cryptocurrency tycoon has emerged as the largest donor to Nigel Farage's political parties, contributing millions of pounds. Christopher Harborne, who also owns a wellness resort in Thailand, is estimated to be one of the richest people alive.
According to a Guardian investigation, Harborne provided two-thirds of Reform UK's funding, including a single donation that was the largest ever made by a living donor to a British political party. The donations have raised questions about what Harborne expects in return for his financial support.
Harborne, who uses the alias Chakrit Sakunkrit in Thailand, is intensely private and does not give interviews. The Guardian's investigations correspondent, Tom Burgis, told the paper's podcast that Harborne's wealth stems from cryptocurrency trading and other business ventures.
The revelations come as Farage's political influence continues to grow, with Reform UK positioning itself as a major force in British politics. Harborne's backing has allowed the party to fund campaigns and operations, but the lack of transparency around his motives has sparked concern among political observers.
