Owners of the iPhone 16 may be eligible for compensation after Apple agreed to a $250 million settlement in a class action lawsuit concerning the alleged false advertising of its Apple Intelligence features for Siri.
Lawsuit Details
The lawsuit, filed in a US federal court in San Jose, California, accused Apple of misleading consumers about the AI capabilities of its virtual assistant. The tech giant settled for $250 million (£184 million) without admitting any wrongdoing. The case centered on claims that Apple promoted a suite of AI upgrades at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, promising they would launch with new iPhones that autumn, but the devices shipped without those features.
Eligibility for Compensation
According to the settlement, anyone who purchased an iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max in the United States between June 2024 and March 2025 could receive up to $95 per device. An estimated 36 million owners are affected. It remains unclear whether the settlement will extend to customers outside the US.
Apple's Response
In a statement, Apple said it had released numerous other AI features since the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024. “Apple has reached a settlement to resolve claims related to the availability of two additional features,” the statement read. “We resolved this matter to stay focused on doing what we do best, delivering the most innovative products and services to our users.”
Future of Siri
The revamped Siri, which will be unveiled at Apple’s annual WWDC next month, comes 15 years after the voice assistant first launched. Apple has since fallen behind rivals like Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI in the AI chatbot race. CEO Tim Cook has prioritized improving Siri, stating during an earnings call, “This is not AI as a standalone feature, but AI as an essential and intuitive part of our devices.”
