Andy Burnham, the Labour leadership hopeful and Manchester Mayor, has been criticised after it emerged he claimed over £17,000 in gifts and hospitality. The revelations, reported by The Sun, include free tickets, gifts, and payments for speeches received during his tenure as mayor, alongside his £118,267-a-year salary.
Between June 2024 and March 2026, Burnham accepted tickets or hospitality worth £17,059 on 17 occasions. This includes a £5,000 trip to the Euro 2024 finals. He also received £1,000 for a paid speaking engagement at the Theos lecture, which he later donated to charity.
The controversy comes as it was revealed Burnham owns a London flat in Kennington, bought in 2005 for around half its current £480,000 value. He has previously spoken about the difficulties young people face in getting onto the housing ladder, yet rents out the property.
Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake accused Burnham of hypocrisy, noting he previously claimed taxpayers' cash to pay mortgage interest on another London property before rule changes. Hollinrake told the Daily Mail: 'The self-styled King of the North, it turns out, has kept a rather comfortable foothold south of the river.'
