Ex-Panthers Cheerleader Says She Was Fired for Being Transgender
NFL's First Trans Cheerleader Claims Unfair Dismissal

Justine Lindsay, who made history as the first openly transgender cheerleader in the NFL, has publicly claimed that the Carolina Panthers dismissed her from the 'TopCats' squad because of her gender identity.

The cheerleader, who had been with the organisation for three years since her groundbreaking entry in 2022, was removed from the team just before the 2025 season. Lindsay stated to Gaye Magazine that the decision was a direct result of her being trans, forcefully rejecting any suggestion that she did not want to return.

A Devastating Blow

Lindsay described feeling 'devastated' and 'hurt' by the dismissal, which she characterised as a 'big slap in the face'. She expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities the Panthers had given her but maintained that she was 'done wrong'.

She also highlighted the timing of the event, noting it occurred 'right after Trump became president' for his second term. While not directly blaming the new administration, she implied a connection to the broader political climate.

The Political Backdrop

The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of significant policy shifts in the United States. President Donald Trump's second term has been marked by executive orders targeting transgender inclusion.

One key order, 'Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,' disqualifies individuals with gender dysphoria or a history of gender-affirming medical care from military service. A separate order, 'Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports,' threatens to revoke federal funding from schools and sports bodies that allow transgender women and girls to participate in female categories.

In response to this federal pressure, NCAA President Charlie Baker has moved his organisation into compliance with the executive order, signalling a wider impact on sports governance. The Carolina Panthers have not yet provided an official comment on Lindsay's allegations.
