A pregnant woman has taken to Reddit to express her discomfort over her partner's desire to name their unborn son 'Black', sparking a heated debate among users. The mum-to-be explained that she and her partner initially made a deal: whoever correctly guessed the baby's gender would have more say in naming. Since they are having a boy, her partner claimed the naming rights. However, she managed to persuade them to scrap the agreement, though she still feels she should have more input.
Partner's Reasoning
Her partner argues that colour-inspired names are already popular, citing examples like Violet and Blue. They believe 'Black' is simply a cool colour name and see no issue with it. The mum-to-be, however, feels uncomfortable because both parents are white, and she thinks 'Black' carries racial connotations beyond being just a colour. She stated, 'It's a race and race is a pretty sensitive topic.' Her partner dismisses this as absurd logic, insisting the name has nothing to do with race.
Public Reaction
Reddit users largely sided with the concerned mother. One commenter said, 'Some colour names can work as given names for a person, like Violet, but Black isn't one of them. It also comes with a lot of implications and is heavily prone to misunderstandings.' Another added, 'Imagine your future child introducing himself: An obviously and visibly white boy walks up and says "Hi, I'm Black." Will this ever go well? Not really. It will be especially awkward when he introduces himself to people who are actually black.'
The mum-to-be clarified that the discussion has not turned into a full-blown argument, and they will not choose a name they don't both agree on. However, the debate continues over whether 'Black' is just a colour or something more charged.
